A gay marriage amendment could soon be up for vote in Michigan as a resolution is introduced to reverse Michigan's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, reports the Advocate.
Currently Michigan's constitution recognizes marriage as being between a man and a woman, but House Speaker pro tem Pam Byrnes just introduced a motion that would reverse the state's ban on same-sex unions.
Michigan voters approved the ban in 2004, but Byrnes is seeking a referendum that would ask voters to amend the constitution.
Byrnes says it's time for a change as reported on the wwmt news channel's website. She would need super-majority votes in both the house and senate to get a same-sex [marriage] proposal on the ballot in Michigan next year.
This is on the heels of an ordinance adopted by Kalamazoo city voters Tuesday that extends anti-discrimination protections to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals.
The ordinance passed 7,671 to 4,731, making Kalamazoo the 16th city in Michigan to adopt such a gay-rights ordinance that grants the protections in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations.
