Ask Emily: A Straight Girl Among Lesbians

A straight girl comes out of her secret closet and proclaims her right to experiment. This week Relationship Expert, Emily Wilcox, attempts to smooth out that fine line between finding women sexy and having sex with women. And a straight girl speaks out about her personal injustice in the lesbian world!

Dear Emily,

I am a straight woman in her 30's, living in a lesbian world. I work at a corporation where the majority of my fellow co-workers are lesbian. We are all together on the same floor of a beautiful NY building. I am very familiar with your column because every week they read it and discuss the content. I, too, have come to take your advice and really enjoy it. So, as much as I love my girls in the office, I feel like I am the odd girl out. They don't include me in outside stuff and social events. It bothers me because I invite them to my events. Of course, I do not discriminate against them, but I cannot help but to feel they can sometimes discriminate against me for being straight. I am newly engaged to my boyfriend and I even fear telling them! Any advice?

Thanks,

Camille

Dear Camille,

Sucks to be you!

Don't take it personally, lesbians and dykes are just punks and bitches.

What? Who wrote that?

All kidding aside, no matter how similar you are to these girls as women, there are two very different worlds happening. In truth, some people with a different sexual preference find it hard to relate to people with the opposite taste. However, all relationship interactions are similar. We all have the same fears, joys, feelings, insecurities, passions and desires.

But here's the deal Camille, who cares if they want to judge you for being a straight woman in today's gay world? You put that ring on your finger, sister and shout out to the world, "I'm engaged to a man!" And let the chips fall where they may, even if they fall on your head. And hurt a little.

If your lesbian buddies are teasing you in good fun, they need to know that it really bothers you. Surely they don't have hearts of steel. At least, most of them!

When recognizing that we are born either straight or gay without a choice, I have to agree that some gay men and women do judge those people who are born straight. Not fair, but luckily not that common. No one can help how he or she was born and no one should criticize, exclude, judge or mock those of a different sexual orientation. You have a right to be straight and tell your lady friends that you are engaged! After all, it's not your fault that you're straight and you deserve happiness, too.

There are similarities between you and your lesbian co-workers and there are differences. Celebrate your similarities and your differences! And let those queers know that you are a human being with feelings and emotions dammit! And then sleep with one of them.

What? Who keeps typing stuff like that?

Absolutely Agree
I could not have said it better myself. Discrimination of any kind just should not exist in this day and age. We should have moved well beyond any sort of intolerance and inequality. We are all one, thanks Emily for the reminder.

Not good!
I have to agree with the fact that lesbians can be a bit cliquish at times so I feel sorry for the straight NY girl stuck in an office with the lesbian gang. Yet that shouldn't prevent anyone from being who they are and if people can't accept it then it's their problem. I never quite understand why more often than not, minority groups who bitch about being discriminated against are the first ones to discriminate against others - seriously, who's kidding who?

Ready and Willing
My girlfriend jokes "every straight girl is one good lick away from a queen lifestyle." as we read this article. We enjoy it a great deal!
