RE: Veg-heads?

I'm "pescatarian" because I will NEVER give up seafood. Mostly dairy free except for cheese (alt cheese is just not the same) and the occasional pint of Ben and Jerry's. I've never been a big meat eater so giving it up was really natural for me. However, I love bacon, especially on sandwiches, but soy bacon works ok. the morningstar crumbles are ok for a beef sub in dishes but still kinda...not meaty.

Lazy Girl's Diet

With this, it's possible to lose up to 10lbs in a month without cooking or preparing meals. Just buy low-fat, low-calorie pre-packaged food from the supermarket.

What is it?
Not everyone can - or wants to - spend hours in the kitchen slaving away on homemade meals. The Lazy Girl's Diet is the ultimate hassle-free diet. There's no need for cooking, weighing or juicing - everything in the meal plans can be bought in a supermarket.
Follow this plan for a month and you could lose up to 10lbs! It's also suitable for vegetarians.

How it works
The Lazy Girl's Diet is made up of pre-packaged food specifically created to be low-fat and low-calorie. So although you're eating ready-meals, they're the healthy ones, not the meals full of fat and salt.
The diet is designed to make sure your portion sizes are restricted and your calorie intake low. These two things combined means you should lose weight.

Who is it good for?
Busy people or people who hate cooking. Anyone whose job means they have to eat on the go.

What are the drawbacks?
Ready meals can be expensive and processed foods tend to contain a lot of salt. You're not allowed any alcohol.

What do you do?
Choose 3 meals a day from the lists below plus 1 snack. Be careful not to skip any meals as this will leave you hungry and tempted to snack.
Drink at least eight cups or glasses of fluid a day. This will keep you hydrated but also take the edge off your appetite. Water's best but diet drinks and tea or coffee without sugar are fine as alternatives
Alcohol is forbidden.
You're also allowed 300ml of skimmed milk (approximately 100 cals) daily on top of any milk mentioned in the meal plans below.

Veg-heads?

I was a vegetarian for three years. Like a lot of people have experienced, I buckled and fell back into the meaty arms of mainstream society, but I recovered and I have managed to get back into it full steam. I am a few dairy products away from being vegan as far as my cooking regiments and eating habits go.

This isn't something I am doing for political reasons, though I do believe that animal mistreatment and cruelty is just that- cruel, and should be met with direct and equally cruel punishment. However I have given up meat and most dairy products for my health. My partner has joined me in this and it has been three wonderful months so far of no bloating, no tummy aches and no weird "vurps" or hiccups because the meat is just sitting there in my stomach waiting for a reprieve.

Who of you are vegetarian/vegan? Tell us your stories, tips, hints, successes. Don't be afraid to ask for advice, too.

I wouldn't mind finding a way to squelch those nasty cravings I get for beef...

RE: Flu Shot? Or Healthy Eating?

I too work with sick elderly folks and I always get the flu shot. I too work with many who won't for various reasons.
My mother will start calling me about 2 months before the flue shot is given out where I work, and ask if I got the flue shot yet? So then I start looking to see when the flue shot is available and eventually my folks and I all confirm we have had the flue shot and the same conversations start again same time next year. Mother says, "once you have the flue you will always get the flu shot". She had it bad at some time, and it laid her up for a couple of months.
Some people are afraid to get the shot. They feel that once the substance is injected into them, their body is at the mercy of whatever is in the vial. Some swear the shot made them sick before.
The elderly should be given the flue shot for sure.

RE: Flu Shot? Or Healthy Eating?

I am a rehab therapist(COTA)and work with the geriatric populace. I work closely with older persons in pretty tight quarters at times. I always get a flu shot, sometimes 2 if the year is really bad. So far, I have not ever had the influenza since I started to take the shot. Some of my co workers refuse to get the shot, again, for various reasons, some of which I am sure you have also. It seems to be about 50% infection rate for those that don't get the shot. I think personally, it's irresponsible for my coworkers to not get immunized because it can be so deadly for the elderly. If you don't work around high risk individuals, you are basically healthy and have no big health problems, why worry? I would probably not get one either if I didn't do the type of work I do.

Flu Shot? Or Healthy Eating?

Okay, so every year my partner and I have this discussion about the flu shot. She absolutely insists on taking it - which is fine with me, she's her own woman. She has a chronic illness and she's afraid the stress of having the flu will make it worse (as it has in the past).

I, on the other hand, absolutely will NOT take the flu shot for many and varied reasons that I'm not going to go into here (read: don't want to be flamed). I'm reasonably health, work mostly at home and don't hand around those likely to transmit the flu. Besides, last year everyone I knew who got the flu shot - still got the flu!! Because the strain in the vaccine didn't match the strain that hit most people. Which happens, apparently, a lot.

I personally feel that being vigilant with cleanliness, being thoughtful with immune-system boosting foods and avoiding 'flu' hotspots (or being rabid about the Purell if you have to be) is a far better method of preventing the flu.

So, what do y'all think?
